Who We Are
AmeriCorps, the domestic Peace Corps engages more than 50,000 Americans
in intensive, results-driven service each year. We're teaching children
to read, making neighborhoods safer, building affordable homes, and
responding to natural disasters through more than 1000 projects. Most
AmeriCorps members are selected by and serve with projects like Habitat
for Humanity, the American Red Cross, and Boys and Girls Clubs, and many
more local and national organizations. Others serve in
AmeriCorps*VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) and
AmeriCorps*NCCC (the National Civilian Community Corps). After their
term of service, AmeriCorps members receive
education awards to help finance college or pay back student loans.
What AmeriCorps Members Do
AmeriCorps members train volunteers, tutor and mentor at-risk youth,
build housing, clean up rivers and streams, help seniors live
independently, provide emergency and long-term assistance to victims of
natural disasters, and meet other community needs.
AmeriCorps*VISTA members have served economically challenged
communities for more than 35 years. The program is dedicated to
increasing the capability of people to improve the conditions of their
own lives. Members of AmeriCorps*VISTA serve full-time and live in the
communities they serve, creating programs that can continue after they
complete their service.
AmeriCorps*NCCC is a ten-month, full-time residential service
program for men and women ages eighteen to twenty-four. Members help
meet the nation's critical needs in the areas of education, public
safety, the environment, and other human needs. AmeriCorps*NCCC combines
the best practices of civilian service with the best aspects of military
service, including leadership and team building.

But there's more. As an AmeriCorps member, you'll be
eligible for a variety of benefits that make the dedication of a year of
your life worthwhile:
Money for college --
After you successfully complete a
year of AmeriCorps service, you will be eligible for an education award
of $4,725. (If you serve part-time, you'll be eligible for a portion of
that amount).
Living allowance
-- If you serve full-time, you'll
receive a modest living allowance. You won't get rich from it, but other
AmeriCorps members have found that it covers their basic expenses.
Help with student loans
-- If you already have student
loans, you can use your education award to help pay them off. And while
you're an AmeriCorps member, you may be eligible for deferment and
forbearance on your student loans. Your lender can tell you for sure. If
you're eligible, AmeriCorps will pay for the interest that is accrued on
student loans for members who complete their service.
You'll
also receive health insurance,
may qualify for child care
assistance, and may get your
relocation expenses covered (depending on your specific
program).
In addition, you'll get
a super career experience and job satisfaction. AmeriCorps members
frequently talk about the difference the experience has made in their
careers -- from technical job skills to experience as a manager, team
member, coordinator, facilitator, and developer. AmeriCorps members get
things done, and that kind of results-oriented experience pays off when
you're finished with your service and considering your next steps,
whether in education or employment.
